DAYS TO HARVEST
Sow beans 1-2″ deep. It is recommended to soak beans 2-6 hours prior to planting.
Pole beans need support of a trellis or fence. Plant seeds 1″ to 2″ deep, 5-6″ apart, in rows 4′ apart within an inch or two of the trellis or pole. For a tepee method, plant 6 to 7 seeds around each pole. May need help climbing.
Beans are NOT hardy and will die with light frost.
Fortex beans picked young at 7″ are extra tender and can grow up to 11″. Continually harvest to encourage future growth and production.
As beans fix nitrogen, they pair well with many other crops especially beets, celery & celeriac, cabbage, potatoes, leeks, and radishes. Strong scented herbs planted near beans may discourage bean beetle.
USES & COOKING SUGGESTIONS
Prepare your green beans by rinsing them in cold water to remove any dirt that may be on them.
Place clean green beans on a cutting board and, using a sharp knife, cut them into smaller pieces — around 1 or 2 inches apiece, depending on how long you want them. You may also decide to leave them whole, which is fine.
Fill a steamer basket with the amount of green beans you want to steam. The basket must be small enough to fit into a saucepan with a lid while leaving at least 1 inch of space between the bottom of the basket and the bottom of the pan.
