HEIRLOOM from as far back as the builders of the pyramids, migrating to northern Europe, then brought to the Americas in the 1500s by the conquistadors. Large, 3-6 in. round roots with deep-black skin, solid white flesh. Sow around the summer solstice for fall harvest. In northern climates, it can be stored all winter; in mild climates it can overwinter in the garden. Sweeter and more dense than spring and fall radish. A sweet addition to salads. An excellent winter tonic that aids digestion and counteracts acidity.
