SOIL REQUIREMENTS
The more compost the better! We transplant our seedlings directly into a hole filled with finished compost. Spraying with compost tea at transplant time is recommended.
PLANT SPACING
2-3 feet apart
HARDINESS ZONES
Warm weather crop. Cucumbers will benefit from row cover before flowering stage to stay warm and to keep cucumber beetles off the plants. Be sure to remove row cover upon flowering so outside insects can assist in pollination. Mulching around the base of the plants will also keep the soil temperature more constant and create a barrier for female cucumber beetles trying to lay their eggs in the soil.
HARVEST
Harvest when fruits are no longer than 3-5″.
COMPANION PLANTING
Dill, tansy, catnip, yarrow, castor bean, wormwood, nasturtium, mints, and marigold will help to deter beetles.
USES & COOKING SUGGESTIONS
This unique heirloom is great fresh in salads or as a snack and makes great sweet pickles as well.
