HEIRLOOM. Think gumbo, jambalaya, or just fried okra. Tall, upright plants carry large yellow and maroon flowers followed in 5 days by tender green pods that keep producing until frost. Harvest every 2-3 days when 2 in. long. Pod tips will snap off if tender and bend if woody. A hot summer is definitely an advantage in growing okra. Once established, the tall upright plants are drought hardy, but produce better and grow taller if even soil moisture is maintained.
