SOIL REQUIREMENTS
Schoenbrunn gold physalis likes some addition of compost, but does not need overly rich soil to thrive.
PLANT HEIGHT
3-4 feet –these will need staking as they can get quite tall!
PLANT SPACING
18-24 inches
HARDINESS ZONES
Not cold hardy
HARVEST
When husks begin to turn from pale yellow to dry tan, pick the fruits from the plants. Unlike the related ground cherries, these fruits will not fall when ripe, so you will want to walk through every few days to check on ripening fruit.
USES & COOKING SUGGESTIONS
Use fresh for topping desserts, make into puree or jam, or add to hot sauces for a sweet, spicy, fruity treat. In our garden some insects seem to like these sweet tangy fruits, so make sure you cut them open before popping them in your mouth, since occasionally one will be home to a critter!
